NSS: Read All You Should Know About Serving The Nation

National Service Scheme (NSS) is an organization backed by the law of the Republic of Ghana, with its related provisions contained in Act 426.

The Act requires every well meaning Ghanaian, who has graduated from any recognized tertiary institution, who is 18 years and above and with sound mind to serve the nation.

The NSS is the regulatory body responsible for posting and paying National Service Personnel allowances due them every months for the service year of one.

The Scheme has below details, with things to be done and not to be done by a National Service Personnel.

MISSION STATEMENT

Mobilize and deploy Ghanaian citizens 18years and above for national development.

VISION STATEMENT

2. Development for Employment

OBJECTIVES

– To supplement manpower shortfalls in both public and private sector.

-To offer NSP exposure, sense of civic duty and voluntarism.

-To help NSP acquire work experience.

-To provide essential service and amenities especially in rural areas.

-To provide national unity and strengthen the bonds of common citizenship among Ghanaians.

-To undertake projects designed to combat hunger, illiteracy, diseases and unemployment in the Ghana.

DURATION/COVERAGE OF THE SERVICE

-The service period spans 12 calendar months.

-General from 1st September to 31st July each service year.

ELIGIBILITY

-Ghanaian
-18years and above
-Sound mind
-Tertiary Graduate

POSTING CRITERIA

-Request from user agencies.
-Skills and relevance of service personnel’s training.
-Government Policies Priorities.
-National Programme
-Sector Ministry’s Priorities Programme
-Scheme’s mandate as per Act 426, our organizational philosophies and strategies.
-Choice of regions (1st, 2nd and 3rd Choices).
-NSS is not mandated to post NSS to their preferred regions or User Agencies.

MAIN SECTORS

>Public
>Private Sectors
-Limited liability companies/private business entities, multi-national business groups, church groups, private quasi governmental institutions (e.g. GNPC, TOR, etc.)
-NGOs
-Any other field prescribed by the Board.

STUDY LEAVE
-With pay
-Without pay
-Part-time study

ANNUAL REPORT FORMS/CERTIFICATION

-Annual Report Forms printed online by NSP May/June each service year.

-Completed by NSP and endorsed by immediate supervisor.

-Returned to NSS District Office by end of June for Certification.

EXEMPTIONS

Granted on the following basis:
-40years – GH₵1,000
-Done HND Service
-2 years non-graduate service with documentation.

DEFERMENT

Granted by GNSS Board on grounds of:
-Proven ill health
-Approved Postgraduate studies
-Exams resits/Training Subjects
